Walter J. "Sonny" Schumacher Jr.

Walter J. Schumacher Jr. age 80, of Platte Center died Monday; December 16, 2002 at the Columbus Community Hospital. Funeral services are 10:00 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Platte Center. The Rev. Rodney Kneifl will officiate. Burial will be in the Ss. Patrick/Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be 3-5 p.m. Thursday at McKown Funeral Home and after 6:00 p.m. at the church. A vigil will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the church. Visitation will continue Friday morning 9:00 a.m. until service time at church.

Walter J. "Sonny" Schumacher, Jr. was born January 7, 1922 in Platte Center to Walter & Bertha (Kuhlen) Schumacher, Sr. He grew up in rural Platte Center and received his education at St. Joseph Grade School, St. Joseph High School, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. On September 29, 1948 he married Lougene Blecher at St. Francis Catholic Church in Humphrey. Walter farmed for 13 years on the home place. He also had his own insurance agency and worked as the state supervisor for Homestead Insurance Company of Lincoln. He was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, served as a Church Trustee, Parish Council, and the Endowment Board. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Scotus Board, and the Elks. Walter was an avid football fan, especially for the Huskers.

Grandson: Trent (Annette) Janssen of Humphrey, NE
Grandson: Jeremy (Jill) Janssen of Platte Center, NE
Granddaughter: Nicole Janssen of Columbus, NE
Granddaughter: Kristi Schumacher of Omaha, NE
Granddaughter: Sara Schumacher of Lincoln, NE
Grandson: Brett Johnson of Franklin, TN
