Early Mon morning we thought we heard thunder -- we now know it was the whistle, the rumble and the roar of the Wabash Cannonball as Chief rode happily into the great beyond. Though we will all miss him, just think of the reunion he must be having with those who "got there before he did." We have many fond memories of one of the most unique characters God ever created, and he will always hold a special place in our hearts. Our heartfelt condolences to all of you. Bud & Con

Vernell, Jim, Mike and all of "Chiefs" family,

Our deepest sympathy goes to your entire family. Chief touched all of our lives over the years. When you would luck out and run into the "Chief" you could always plan on a terrific story, a joke, or just a word of how are you and your family. My (Lori's)memory was when Chief taught me how "One COOL says hello to another COOL" then every time I would see him, he would say, "Lori Bierman, how does one cool say hello to another cool?" I would give him the hand gesture he had taught me, he would giggle a bit and say "that's right Lori Bierman!" Then he would usually continue with his rendition of "Sweet Georgia Brown" I regret I will not be able to attend the services today but my thoughts and prayers will be with all of you! Farewell to an absolute "Great!" This is "One Cool saying FAREWELL to The Greatest Cool!" Always, Lori Billy's fondest memory was meeting the chief at Gibson's snack bar years ago, and enjoying chiefs story of his years with the Harlem Globetrotters. My Mom (Della) and I send our deepest sympathy and our memories of Chief will stay with us the rest of our lives! He will always be missed, and remembered here! Sincerely, Billy Drozd and Della DeRock

Dear Mrs. Rankin:

My mother, Virginia, called me on Monday, June 11th to tell me that the "Chief" had passed away. You and your family have my deepest sympathy.

My father, Bill, introduced me to the "Chief" when I was in high school. My dad always had a soft spot in his heart for the "Chief". I remember my dad telling me stories about the "Chief" and his basketball career as well as his distinguished service in the military. My dad always told me that the "Chief" was the best athlete that Platte County had ever seen and also it's most highly decorated vetran.

As the years went by, I also had the chance to get to know the "Chief." He followed me around at several state golf tournaments in the late 70's and early 80's. It was always nice to see his face in the gallery.

We also met and enjoyed a cup of "coffee" or two at Teddy's Tea Room whenever I was in town.

I am truly honored to have known such a fine individual. You should have some comfort in knowing that the "Chife" had a long, full and most colorful life. He experienced more than any of us ever will.

Good bye to a truly great man. Chief you will be missed.

Most sincerely,

Cathy Curry

I just wanted to offer my condolences. I have such fond memories of "Chief" and am so very sorry to hear of his death. I remember how much my dad (Jim Gregorius) and Chief loved each other and hold dear the conversation I had with Chief shortly after my dad's death. You will all be in my prayers. Michele Beard
